First Notes is the name of the first Quilt Concert Series Quilt being done by @lovinglylissa and @cassandra.beaver Several members of our Twilight guild are doing this as an informal summer sew along. Will you join us? It is open to everyone and the weekly instructions are free, for 1 week. You can find all about it here! If you are planning on doing this, please save them each week. Once new instructions are up, the past ones are available for $2 per week.
This week the directions are for cutting all the fabrics. You can download the cutting directions here! Yikes! Do you do that? You are committed then! Please share your thoughts on cutting out a quilt all at once or one block at a time on our Instagram or Twilight Quilters’ Guild Facebook posts!
You can see some alternate colourways if you scroll through the Instagram hashtag #quiltconcert2021. This one is pretty bright!
Denise Eighteen is going to be sharing her blocks with us each week.
Our last month! And it is Foundation Paper Piecing. Are you a whiz at it now? If you need help, please reach out to us. It’s a great skill and not something to be afraid of. But it might take a few times before you become confident. Remember, it is your quilt, and you can change up the blocks if you want! There are tons of 12.5” unfinished block directions out there and you can substitute any block you want.
You can find this month’s PDF here and a couple alternate layouts below. Sandra’s block instructions can be found here! We will show some alternate layouts at our meeting. Below, you will find links to some articles about alternate layouts.
Please join us on June 14th when our guest is Ana Buzzalino from Calgary! Guests are always welcome. Please book your virtual seat no later than 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 13. Find out how to sign up and pay your guest fee ($10).
Ana’s work focuses on Art Quilting, incorporating different elements of surface design. She uses fabric painting, mono-printing, screen printing and embroidery techniques. She works mostly with her own artist hand dyed and designed fabrics. She has been teaching quilting since 1986. From traditional techniques such as free motion quilting and New York Beauties block to art techniques. She’s a frequent contributor to Quilting Arts magazine and to A Needle Pulling Thread. She has been published in many more magazines and she’s also appeared on Quilting Arts TV.
What a great presentation last night. You can find more of Bill’s work on his website, Facebook and Instagram. Bill has been interviewed on a couple podcasts. Brandy of “Quilter on Fire” had him for episode 5. Scroll down the listing to find it. Brandy taught us her Colourways workshop this winter and we are having her as a speaker next year. She has a great variety quilters on her weekly podcast. I bet you will learn something every episode!
Bill was also interviewed by his friend Jeff Rutherford on his “Quilting Stories” podcast and you can listen to that episode here!
Bill has been inspired by Chawne Kimber and her social justice messages in her sometimes controversial quilts. She is very active on Instagram. Here is an interview with Chawne.
Our next speaker, on June 14th, is Ana Buzzalino. Details coming soon.
Our Lockdown UFO Challenge was so successful that we are going to do it again this month! Take a photo of a languishing project, complete at least a quilt top and send both photos in for show and tell next month. All show and tell photos should be emailed to twilightsimcoe@gmail.com by the Sunday before the meeting please.
Bill is a storyteller and once he discovered quilting 7 years ago, he had a new voice! Fabrics and carefully placed stitches express joy, anguish, hope, gratitude, and love, providing glimpses into deep and important stories; stories that matter on personal and social levels. His quilts make bold statements and provoke thoughtful consideration of a variety of issues. “With the help of about 20 of my quilts, I’ll tell their stories… my stories. I doubt that these quilts, and their stories, will remind you of your Grandmother’s quilts.”
Bill will be sharing his newest “Backpack Show” with us, highlighting the social justice issues that are so important to him and many of us. There will be tears! Find out the story behind this newest quilt. As an educator in his previous career, Bill can teach us many things.
This is our 10th block! Only 2 more after this. If you are a new owner of a Stripology slotted ruler, this is a perfect block for that. Cut 2.5” strips of your coloured and background fabrics, then line them up on the cutting mat horizontally and subcut 1.5” pieces. You can have all 36 of the 2.5” x 1.5” rectangles cut in a couple minutes. The centre star uses a stitch and flip technique that makes a slightly wonky star. But you can do whatever star you’d like. The downloadable PDF is here!
You can find Bordered Star, our Modern BOM here! We are going to be doing the second May block this month, while we still have lots of sewing time. You can find Sandra’s tutorial here! Thanks again Sandra for helping us make these monthly blocks. Feeling left out? You can start this block of the month now! You can find all the blocks here!
Peter Byrne will be teaching his Hover-quilting workshop on Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4. From 9:45-2 on both days. The cost of the workshop is $40. And there are still a few spots available.
Register by emailing Karen Johnstone or twilightsimcoe@gmail.com. Price of workshop is $40 plus the cost of the kit if you choose.Kits need to be ordered by Monday, April 12.
Hover-quilting is a new form of raw edge appliqué, absent of fusible web. This innovative technique produces not only a beautiful controlled frayed edge, but also creates the illusion of your piecing hovering above the quilt top.
On day one, students will focus on preparing their quilt sandwich, make 36 HST’s and finish the design layout. On day two, you will complete a 16-inch square mini hover-quilt. Students will learn unique design elements such as Cathedral Window, a School of Fabric and Pathways that make this technique so versatile and creative.
Kits are available for $35 plus $5 bulk shipping. Peter’s Hover-quilting kits have been made with Colorworks Premium Solids from Northcott Fabric and include beautiful prints from Northcott’s Artisan Spirit Collection called “Shimmer” and have been paired with Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics. They include a spool of 60 wt Perfect Cotton-Plus thread, a No Slip Ruler and Soft-Blend Batting. Kits are available with your choice of a black background or white background.
If you need help making your own kit for the workshop, you can go to Instagram and search @hoverquiltingworkshop. There you will find the suggested supply list, fabric requirements and how to videos to assist in making your kit!
Please let Karen know what kit works best for you, either the kit with the black background or the kit with the white background and your kit will be reserved for the workshop. Kits need to be ordered by Monday, April 12.
